I have decided to make a video for Uprising, by Muse. whilst researching this genre such as nirvana, radio head, placebo aswell as other music videos from muse, i found that most videos from this genre have a lot of similarites; the three songs i chose to show where uprising-muse, just-radio head and come as you are-nirvana.
the first similarity i found was that all of these videos have an surreal feel to them used through the use of camera angles, setting and props.
nirvana:
-
here the use of water coming over the shot which doesnt allow us to clearly see his face gives this shot a surreal/enagmatic feel as we cant make out a clear face in this shot.
muse:
in this feel theres a very sci-fi(dr. who/twilight zone), the camera tracking through a miniature town with 'fake' people gives a very fake, surreal and dream like feel to it.
radiohead:
here the create a dreamlike reality by having the camera tracking a man who seems to be alone which gives the video that surreal quality.
another common feature used in these videos from this genre was setting. generally these videos have very dark enclosed spaces and theres little light which adds a more sinister feel to the videos.
nirvana:
in this clip we can see that there is very little lighting in the room. th room itslef is squared giving a very dark and intense atmosphere.
muse:
although the muse video is in an open space there is very little lighting and also through the use of driving trough the miniature town gives a feeling of entrapment in a fake city.
radiohead:
in this video the idea of being enclosed is shown as we just see the man alone in the middle of a dark room which gives a sinister feel
and the most common featureof all music videos from this genre is that there are some shots of the band singing and playing instruments, whilst following some sort of story.
nirvana:
muse:
radiohead:
Goodwin's music video theories in the video.
the muse video involves andrew goodwins theory to illustarte as their video conveys the meaning of their lyrics, the song is about a fake world. There is a relationship between the video and the lyrical content in this video. there are lots of close ups of the main singer which can be seen in all of the other videos aswell.
the nirvana video is complelty in disjuncture with the music video as there is no stroy line that is followed and there is no relationship between the lyrics and the video, however i think that the due to the disjuncture this ampllifies the lonliness which the song is about.
The radiohead video has a storyline that amplifies the ameaning of lonliness and self destruction in the lyrics. once again in this video as with all the other videos there are many close ups of the lead singer and the band.
the genre of alternative rock is very diverse and can range from a more poppish style to a darker feel about paranoia or lonliness. the videos we chose have quite dark side to them howeever bands such as MGMT have a more poppish vibe to them
